WELLINGTON - A dolphin was able to drive and bring two large sperm whales that had stranded on the beach at Mahia on the east coast of North Island, one of the largest islands New Zealand. The sample of female bottlenose dolphin, which beach goers have nicknamed Moko, was able to communicate with the two cetaceans (pygmy sperm whales) that were likely to die on beach and taking them away to save them from the mainland. "I have never seen such a thing, that's amazing," said Malcolm Smith, an official of the Conservation Department. Smith said Monday that the sperm whales were stranded on several occasions, despite his attempts - all unsuccessful - to get them away from the beach. The whales, a female three-meter and its smaller than a meter and a half, they were disoriented, apparently disturbed by a sandbar near the beach and could not find the way to the sea. "For an hour and a half I tried to push them into the sea, but were reluctant to leave the dock," he continued. "They were exhausted," he said, "and I had gotten to the point that I thought not make more, I did my best. "Then came Moko, used to swim among the swimmers, approaching boats to be caressed and push the nose of the kayak. The dolphin began to produce sounds and communicate. "Sperm whales are able to establish contact and Moko escorted them about 200 meters to the edge of the sandbar," said Smith, "then did a turn through quite a narrow channel and escorted them into the sea." Since then the two whales were far from the beach at Mahia, where each year some thirty whales get stranded, most of which can not be saved. "I do not know if the next time a whale is stranded able to return to Moko "concluded the expert, "surely this time he saved the day for us and the lives of two sperm whales."
